Pivetta has been sidelined by a right flexor strain since mid-April. The right-handed hurler began a throwing program in late May, but he's yet to throw from a mound. With that big step potentially looming, it appears Pivetta is making tangible progress in his recovery. Nonetheless, he's not expected to return to San Diego's rotation until sometime after the All-Star break.

Cronenworth was originally slated to make his first rehab appearance Thursday, but he had to wait an extra day while the process of receiving full medical clearance was completed. The veteran outfielder seemed to be champing at the bit to get back given his first place appearance Friday, as he walloped a 413-foot two-run homer to right field. It was Cronenworth's first game action since May 4, so he'll presumably need several more contests in the minors before he's ready to be activated.

France was nailed in the wrist by a Roki Sasaki fastball in the fourth inning Friday. The veteran infielder initially stayed in the game but was then replaced by Miguel Andujar at first base in the ninth inning. The good news for France is that X-rays returned negative, but he's nonetheless beginning on the bench for Saturday's matchup. Manager Craig Stammen said Saturday that France isn't looking at an IL stint and that he'll be available off the bench for the evening contest, so it doesn't sound like the infielder is dealing with a serious injury.

In a corresponding move, the Padres recalled JP Sears from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Giolito struggled in his last two starts June 15 and 21 by allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits and five walks through nine innings.

Making what was his fourth rehab start with El Paso, Marquez built up to 73 pitches (43 strikes) and induced seven swings and misses. The right-hander has looked sharp throughout his assignment, compiling a 1.76 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB in 15.1 innings. Marquez looks ready to return from the 15-day injured list during the upcoming week, and while the Padres haven't revealed their plans for the 31-year-old, he would be a logical choice to replace the struggling Griffin Canning (6.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP over 42 innings) when his next turn in the rotation comes up Tuesday versus Atlanta at Petco Park.

Waldron breezed through his 2.1 frames on 27 pitches, yielding just one hit. It was Waldron's first outing in exactly one month, as he's working his way back from a right brachialis muscle injury. If the knuckleballer is added back to the major-league roster at the conclusion of his rehab assignment, he is expected to be used in a relief role.

Campusano has now been out over a month after fracturing a toe on his left foot in early May. The backstop has been catching pitches and swinging pain-free since late May, but San Diego hasn't yet sent him out on a rehab assignment. Fellow backstop Freddy Fermin exited Saturday's contest against Baltimore after being hit by a warmup pitch near the back of the head, so the only healthy catcher on San Diego's 26-man roster at the moment is Rodolfo Duran.

Manager Craig Stammen said that Laureano's surgery is expected to keep him out for 4-to-5 months, making it extremely unlikely that he plays again this season. If the 31-year-old isn't able to make it back before the end of the year, he'll finish 2026 with a .203/.286/.374 slash line alongside seven homers, 21 RBI, 23 runs and seven steals over 53 games. Gavin Sheets will likely take over as San Diego's primary left fielder for the rest of the regular season, which will allow Ty France to start regularly at first base.

Estrada entered the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied at 2-2. The 27-year-old allowed Bryce Harper to cross home plate as the go-ahead run as a result of an Alec Bohm double play, limiting the damage at just one. Estrada has given up two earned runs in his last two appearances after previously pitching 4.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander now commands a 3.48 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB through 20.2 innings this season.
